This ride will guide you through the mean back streets of Encinitas and Carlsbad… and when I say “mean”, it means, of course, the hilly back streets of Encinitas and Carlsbad! There are no long climbs on this ride, and none of the hills are excessively steep. I named this route, “Local Segments Ride”, and if you are a Strava afficionado, you will quickly realize that this ride hits dozens of Strava segments, some of which are more popular than others. This ride will show you some lesser known byways to add in to your weekly routes, and will also offer the option to challenge yourself with some intervals (bursts of speed and intensity for fairly short duration to spike your heart rate). The intervals are, of course, completely optional – and not to worry – the people who participate in the intervals will be completely wasted immediately afterwards, so there will be no problem regrouping after an interval.
This ride is designed for Advanced and Intermediate riders (mainly for length and intensity). All hills can be taken at a lower intensity.

There are two route options:
1. Advanced and Intermediate – 39.6 miles with ~3023 feet of elevation. This group will be warming up down the coast, and then sprinkling intervals in throughout the main portion of the ride, alternating with very moderate speeds in between for recovery. Intervals are optional; we will regroup following each effort. Intermediate riders are welcome on this ride. Note there is no separate intermediate leader today – but there are two leaders in the Advanced group. In between the intervals, it’s a great time to ask questions.

2. Beginner – 31.3 miles with ~2088 feet of elevation. This group will follow the same route as the Advanced/Intermediate group, just turning back to the shop sooner with significantly less elevation. This group will be simply riding the route and will not be participating in the intervals. This is a “no drop” ride.
